Natural Mole Repellents

Mole repellents - Moles can cause havoc in your lawn because of the tunnels that they build because these tunnels usually tamper with the soil and the plants. That is why to humans, these pests are always referred to as pests. You have to take drastic measures in order to drive them away from your lawn. This resulted into introduction of mole repellents and they are categorized into two, those that can be obtained at the comfort zone of your home and those that can be bought from the stores.

Natural mole repellents
They always help get rid of the moles and they are very cheap to obtain. There are usually plant barriers that you can use throughout the lawn and they will always deter and drive away the moles.

Daffodils
Daffodils are plants that can survive throughout the year provided that they are well taken care of. They have bright yellow flowers that usually have a strong scent. The scent is known to repel moles away from a certain region and its roots are very poisonous hence they have the ability of killing the moles one they come in contact with the plant. You will be safer when this plant is in your lawn but it will not yield the very best results. Killing the moles is not advisable because they are living creatures just like you.

Marigold plant
The Marigold plant produces different types of flowers that are very harmful to the moles, they mature very quickly and when moles realize that they exist in your lawn, they will immediately withdraw because they know that their chances of survival have been reduced.

Alliums
The alliums plant produces purple flowers that produce a scent that is not very pleasant to the moles, the roots of these plants are equally poisonous and they usually kill the moles very fast. It is related to the garden onions and garlic. Therefore, if your lawn does not support growth of onions which is also a mole repellent you can plant the Alliums because they can thrive in any type of soil and throughout the year.

Fritillaries
They are very delicate and exotic wild plants that you can come across while in the wilderness. In fact they are of the Lilly family and they always bloom when they are fully grown. Once you come across this plant, you can transport it into your yard and transplant in your backyard. Moles are very sensitive and because they release very strong scents, then moles will always avoid your yard. Their roots are also very vicious and they will always kill the moles once they dare to come in contact with the plant. You can opt for this plant if all the other means are not workable but try hard and ensure that you come up with other measures that will prevent the moles from dying. You can therefore do this by building an underground fence around the plant so that the moles will not come into close contact with it. Once they sense the smell of the plant, they will definitely look for another lawn to dig their tunnels.

Castor beans
The plant is very vicious and dangerous to all it’s surrounding, it is very poisonous to humans, other animals and the moles. When you come into contact with the plant, it releases its scent and if it is inhaled then it can chock you to death. There is therefore no need of using a repellent that will put all the lives of the creatures surrounding it n danger. It has a very adverse effect to the moles because it does not drive them away but it kills them instantly. Moles are very intelligent and they will stay away if they sense that there is a castor plant in a certain yard. To keep everybody safe, you can avoid using this repellent and use other methods that are less dangerous but effective.

Mixing solutions
By mixing castor oil, liquid soap and water you can come up with a solution. The solution is then sprayed to the lawns which will keep the moles away for some time till the smell has faded away. It is therefore not a long term solution to highly rely on.

Off the shelf repellents
There are several repellents that people believe that they are effective but in the real sense, they do no good.

Liquid mole repellents
There are different kinds and they are usually sprayed on the grass and in the open tunnels. In most scenarios, they always kill the moles which is not considered as the best solution.

Moth balls
Moth balls are specifically meant for the insects and using them as bait to capture the moles will rarely yield any results.

Ammonia
Ammonia soaked in cotton balls are also popularly used, the strong smell will always drive the moles away but the fact is that the smell will not last forever. Once the smell has faded away, the moles are likely to pay you a visit and this time they may be more than one. It is therefore advisable to use procedures that are more effective like trapping and avoid those that are ineffective and lethal.
