MOLE TRAPPING: HOW TO TRAP A MOLE
Moles dig holes and create tunnels underground in their efforts to find food and move to different locations. They usually feed on earthworms which are found in the soil, thereby explaining why there are so many burrows on the ground. Their constant habit of digging underground and destroying the aesthetic value of lawns makes them to be considered as pests. There are a number of methods or solutions that have been developed to counter the problems that moles bring into our yards. Mothballs have been used in the past but have been found to be ineffective. The use of chemicals that are explosive on the ground is also dangerous to both humans and animals so that makes it a non-considerable technique.
Therefore, the only solutions that people have decided is appropriate is trapping these moles and manually removing them from your property. There are different types of traps and different methods used to trap moles. The number and size of traps will usually depend of the number of moles that need to be trapped. The technique used to trap them usually depends on the monitored
behavior of the mole.
There are different trap types used to catch these moles. These include Spear traps, Paper Clip traps and scissor traps. The all have one common objective; Trapping the mole. You have to know exactly where to place these traps or you will end up catching nothing at all.
Here’s what to do:
- Identify the prime tunnel that the mole uses. Although the mole digs tunnels underground every day, there is always one that it constantly uses either to enter or exit your yard. The tunnels usually converge at one central point and this is the best point of capture.
- Collapsing the tunnel is the next step. This will create e a permanent or temporary obstruction on its pathway. At the tunnel’s bottom, push little amounts of soil but make sure you leave a clear path. If you are using a trap that is home made, then place it beneath the tunnel.
If you have scissor traps, the jaws need to be placed around the dirt pile at the bottom but a path has to be left between the trap jaws. After this, the trap has to be cocked.
- Make sure the trap is set correctly and you have to know that kind of trap you are using because wrong placement of the wrong traps leads to wrong results.
- Always check these traps frequently and observe the activity around them. If the mole is not trapped within the first 3 days then consider setting the trap in another location.
- After you trap it, dispose it.
- You can also call the animal handling service in your city on advice on what to do after trapping it.
